Claddagh ring with green chalcedony
Did you binge-watch television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the
1990s? You probably remember Angel, a gentle vampire from Ireland. He gave a
ring to Buffy to symbolise their eternity together: a proper Claddagh ring. In
real life, Walt Disney wore one as well. When you visit Magic Kingdom Park in
Florida, check out the Partner Statue in front of Cinderella Castle. Guess what
the copper version of Walt Disney is wearing on his right hand? Bingo. Last but
not least: one of my favourite singers rocking this Irish design is Liam
Gallagher. If you watch Oasis’s music video ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ you can
tell he’s really showing off the Claddagh ring.
What makes this piece of jewellery so special? For starters, the
traditional Irish ring is a true token of love. Often worn as an engagement
ring or wedding ring because of the three symbols of love, loyalty and
friendship represented by the heart, crown and hands.
Nerd alert: the Claddagh ring dates from the 17th century! Back in the
days, you didn’t have social media to proclaim your relationship status. With
this ring, much like Facebook, your relationship status can be updated easily.
Here’s a short guide to avoid any awkward moments or give off mixed signals.
- Single: wear the ring on the right hand with the heart turned away from your body which means your heart is open to love.
- In a relationship: wear the ring on the right hand with the heart facing towards the hand.
- Engagement ring: wear the ring on the left hand with the heart pointing away from the hand.
- Wedding ring: wear the ring on the left hand with the heart pointing to the hand.
