Vintage shell cameo ring

Handcrafted and timeless miniatures. Cameos first became popular during the Roman Empire and then made a revival in the Renaissance. It has enjoyed lasting popularity throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

The cameo in this ring was made from shell and assayed in Birmingham in 1975.

One of my favourite cameo exhibitions can be found at the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden (the Netherlands). It boasts over 100 hand-carved cameos from the Classical World and medieval times up to the seventeenth century. Have you read my blog about this collection?
